Lake Tomahawk was always known as a tourist attraction because of its lakes and gorgeous scenery. In 1961 Town Chairman, Ray Sloan, wanted to give summer tourists and residents another source of entertainment so he invited other area teams to challenge the hometown squad to games in the summer months, replacing the usual snow-covered field with saw chips.
This summer will be a very special one as the Wounded Warrior Softball Team will be coming to the North woods for games the last weekend in July. A regular snowshoe game is planned for Friday evening, July 25th, at the Snowhawks’ field in Lake Tomahawk. Beginning at noon on Saturday, the two teams will play a doubleheader of regular softball at the Highway #70 West sports complex in Minocqua.
The Snowhawk games are played each Monday evening beginning at 7:30 with the starting contest set for June 23rd and concluding August 25th with the annual benefit game for Lakeland Food Pantry. The July 4th game will again feature the Chicago All-Star team. The stands at Snowshoe Park provide one of the finest viewing sites for the town‘s fireworks which follow the holiday contest. Spectators constantly can be heard saying this is one of the best displays they have witnessed.. A second contest with the Chicagoans is set for Monday, July 7th. One of the most entertaining evenings is the Newswatch 12 Media Night on July 21st, a time for fans to enjoy the antics of the TV personalities. The Jack & Jill coed game on July 28th is a real fan-pleaser as well.
We do not charge admission but a butterfly net is passed through the stands during the middle of the game. The net proceeds provide Snowshoe with revenue used for expenses as well as donations to various charitable projects which help out community needs.
A concession stand is available on the grounds and is sponsored by the following area service clubs: Lions, Lioness, Legion and Legion Auxiliary, Circle of Women, Sno-fleas snowmobile club, Lake Tomahawk Bible Church and the Lake Tomahawk Volunteer Firemen. Food is available beginning at 5:15 p.m. for the convenience of residents and visitors to the area. The menu includes brats, hamburgers, cheesburgers, hot dogs, soft drinks and coffee. You won’t be able to resist the vast array of homemade pies to top off your pre-game meal. Some nights there are 60 varieties to choose from. A popcorn stand is available each game which fits right in with Jimmy Soyck and Don Hilgendorf, co-announcers, singing their 7th Inning rendition of “Take me out to the Ballgame”.
For further information, contact manager Coach Don Hilgendorf at either 715-277-2554 or 715-482-3349.
Games played every Monday night June 20 to August 29, @ 7:30 pm.
Concession stand opens at 5:30 pm with food and soft drinks.
