Snowshoe Baseball

In 1961, Lake Tomahawk Town Chairman, Ray Sloan, wanted to give summer tourists something other than great fishing, swimming and the beautiful Northwoods' scenery. He consequently invited other town teams to challenge the Lake Tomahawk Team to snowshoe baseball games during the summer months in northern Wisconsin. This year marks the 48th year of play and the town is known as the Snowshoe Baseball Capital.

The Snow Hawks games are played each Monday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m. starting June 29th and conclude with the second annual benefit game on Saturday, September 5th and proceeds will go to both the Lakeland Food Pantry and Lakeland Sharing Foundation. A game is also played on the 4th of July featuring a Chicago team and then followed by the town fireworks. Two of the games during the season involve the ladies and are called "Jack and Jill" co-ed events. These games are always real fan favorites. One of the biggest nights is the NRG Media Game consisting of area media personnel from area radio and television stations on snowshoes. There is no admission charge but a butterfly net is passed throughout the stands and proceeds go to the operating expenses and the newly-installed lighting system. There is a concession stand sponsored on the grounds and area service clubs take turns. Groups include the Lions, Lioness, Legion & Auxiliary, Women's Church Guild, Snow-fleas Snowmobile Club, Lake Tomahawk Bible Church, and area Youth Baseball coaches. Food is served beginning at 5:30 p.m. for the convenience of visitors and residents. The menu includes brats, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, got dogs, soft drinks and the very popular home-made pies of every type imaginable.
